Mission Statement

It is the purpose of the Calgary APTA Festival to bring together piano enthusiasts of all levels and in all styles of play to share and enjoy music. It is for this reason that classes are non-competitive.

It is the commitment of this festival that each performer will receive adjudication by a leading musician in piano music to assist with moving forward in his/her learning experience.

It is the hope of this festival that students, teachers, and music lovers enrich their musical skills and knowledge each time they participate.

2023 APTA Festival – March 4th-18th, 2023

Classes will be held from:

  • 9 AM – noon
  • 1:30 -4:30 PM
  • 6:30 to 9:30 PM daily, other days than Sundays

Adjudicators: 

The continued goal of the festival is to provide an opportunity for students to play in a performance atmosphere that is encouraging and constructive. All participants will receive a certificate and a written adjudication.

The following classes are being offered:

The Quest for the Hidden Tale – Saturday, March 4th, 2023 – 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
The music remains, but the tale is missing!!!! Help find the missing story plot by exploring the instruments, sounds and feel of the music until the story is revealed! 

Games are for beginner to intermediate students.

I Sing and Play – A unique class for students interested in both singing and playing piano! All genres of music are acceptable. This class requires the pianist to sing while accompanying his/ herself on the piano. For those wanting to accompany a singer, please enter the combo class (one section)

Pop, Blues & Jazz – This class includes any contemporary style. Improvisation is strongly encouraged. (one selection)

Solo – any one solo selection for any age or level

Recital – perform contrasting pieces as a recital set for any age or level, max 20 minutes (two to three selections)

Teen Solo – Ages 12 to 17, Preparatory to Grade 4 (one selection) 

Teen Recital – Ages 12 to 17, Preparatory to Grade 4 (two or three selections)

Adult Solo – 18 years and up (one selection)

Adult Recital – 18 years and up (two to three selections)

Piano Composition – A class for young composers! Students perform one of their own compositions (one selection) Compositions need to be submitted in draft form or completion along with registration

Piano Combo - Any combination of performers which includes at least one person on piano. Combos can include a vocalist or any instrument. The performer submitting the registration is responsible for communication with their partners (one selection)

Piano Duet/Trio Class - This class includes four hands, six hands or more, as well as two piano works. If two pianos are required please state this under special requests.  The performer submitting the registration is responsible for communication with their partners (one selection)
